What would you say, are you a dreamer? Have you ever been a dreamer? I would say I am. From time to time. Not always but many times. I have always new ideas, new visions. And I do work on that. I refine them and then it’s not anymore a dream but a project.
Is it wrong being a dreamer?
What did you dream when you were a kid
When you were a kid. Did you have dreams? What were they? Like being a Pilot or working as a Fireman? How about Prima Ballerina? I asked a few kids if they have dreams. And they are full of dreams. How their future will look. What they will do when they grow older. Do you remember yours? I do. It took me a few years but I am pretty close to what I dreamed when I was a little girl.
“There are those who look at things the way they are, and ask, why? I dream of things that never were, and ask, why not?” – Robert Kennedy
Reality vs Dreams
What should we say to our children. Stop dreaming and live in the reality. The reality pays bills but your dreams will not? That would be so sad. Imagine if people would not have dreams. How would our world look like. I think pretty sad.
Some people I spoke to said that dreams are not good. They confuse your life and you will never really live in the reality if you try to follow always your dreams.
I asked other persons and they said, that they are already living their dreams. They travel the world. What would be better than traveling the world.
Living the dream
But do they really ( I mean really) living their dream? I spoke to some travel bloggers. They said that they do follow their dreams but… (aha, there is a but) it can be very sad traveling all the time alone. Of course you meet new and sometimes old friends. But at the end of the day you are alone. If you don’t have someone to share your thoughts or experiences it can be lonely. They wish to travel the world and be free but at the meantime to have something stable. Especially to have someone.
There are couples traveling together. That’s probably different. But if you ever traveled with a partner you know what I mean when I say – “easy? Are you kidding?”. Of course because there are two hearts and two heads that have sometimes different opinions. And this is normal.
I spoke to some very important business men. They seem to be very happy. They have a boat, a wonderful house, a healthy family and some great other luxury things around. Do they live their dreams? They are very successful. This is what they ever wanted to be. But… (here again another but) they have a great responsibility. And this is not always easy. So many people depend on them. And so many bills have to be paid every month. Was this their dream?
Dreams can change. You don’t have to stick to an old dream if you already have something different in your mind. But sometimes we are getting in our own way.
John Lennon
John Lennon said once: “I believe in everything until it’s disproved. So I believe in fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists, even if it’s in your mind. Who’s to say that dreams and nightmares aren’t as real as the here and now?”
Dreams are not real
Who said this? I think many people have lost their faith. Their faith in everything. They try to tell you that being a dreamer is bad. They try to tell you that your children need to understand early the reality of life and not to support their crazy dreams.
Don’t listen to them. Dreams are real because you make them real. Maybe not all of them. I would love having some of my fantasy characters as friends (good-looking vampires or some dark angels). I’m more talking about YOUR dreams. Your personal dreams. During the years when we grow up we lose the capacity to see and feel things. If we can’t see it, it is not real. But it is real. You can see it and you should go for it.
“Why can’t you fly now, mother?”
“Because I am grown up, dearest. When people grow up they forget the way.”
“Why do they forget the way?”
“Because they are no longer gay and innocent and heartless. It is only the gay and innocent and heartless who can fly.” J.M. Barrie (Peter Pan)
Being a dreamer or being a fool
I think there is a big different of being a dreamer or being a fool. Dreamer know exactly that if they don’t do anything their dreams will stay their dreams – forever. Dreamer have visions, ambitions and ideas. Maybe crazy ideas for some people. Fools live in their dreams without seeing the world around them. They do nothing to realize their dreams. Dreamers find ways but fools find excuses.
Never compare fools with dreamers.
“A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.” – Colin Powell
Successful dreamers
Walt Disney was a dreamer. I love the Walt Disney Movies. He still (not he personally anymore) creates dreams.
“All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” – Walt Disney
The theory of relativity from Albert Einstein was in his dreams when he was as a young boy.
Oprah Winfrey was called insane and crazy when she moved (as a black women) to Chicago to work as a Talk master.
Sir Richard Branson is the founder and CEO of the Virgin Group. He was a dreamer and with 16 he craved together the funds from advertisers publish a magazine called ‘Student’.
“Dreamers make the changes that make the world a better place.”
The right way
Is there a right way to dream and live our dreams? I think yes it is.
“To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.” – Anatole France
Don’t give up
Every amazing invention started with a “crazy” idea, with a dream. From time to time we should stop and let our thoughts run free. Sometimes we are so taken by our daily routine that we forget that there is more outside. Remember the dreams you had. Why did you give them up? Too unrealistic? Maybe, maybe not.
We should definitely not taking advises from wrong people. People that think to know everything but they don’t. We should not take for granted the advice from teachers who does not watch over their horizons. Especially not if they are going to tell you that your kids should stop dreaming.
Don’t try to “fit in”. Be whoever you want to be. Even it that means that people will laugh at you. You can show them later that they were wrong. Be an example. You are never too old to dream.
Like everything else in life we should try to find our balance. The balance to dream but not to be a fool. Let’s be from time to time a little bit more Peter Pan.
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
Everything starts with a dream. You are the creator of your dreams and your dreams have no limit!

Bravo! You are correct, we give up on our own dreams. Children’s faith leaves us too quickly as we grow into cynical adults.
I love this article Claudia. Being able to dream and imagine possibility, or potential is so important. I believe that remaining curious and open to new experience your whole life is also a key part of that. Keep that childlike sense of wonder because the world we live in truly is wondrous. Yes, it takes courage, effort, belief and perseverance to manifest dreams and create reality, but it all starts with a dream.
Thank you so much Dale!!
Yes I think so too. We should from time to time not forget to dream. I couldn’t even imagine to live without doing that. Every idea starts with a dream. Doesn’t matter if it is during the night or during the day while sitting on the beach. 😉
You’re very welcome Claudia!
I totally agree. I’ve been a dreamer my whole life and I can’t imagine life without dreaming and imagination. I’ve kept journals and sketchbooks of dreams or ideas most of my life and many have become reality. Like you said, it doesn’t matter whether it’s night, day, on a plane, getting a haircut, or sitting on a beach. 🙂
I think there is nothing more to add. We are definitely on the same “wavelength” 😉
